The use of Wi-Fi for carrying video traffic is an attractive proposition for many usage scenarios. However, big variations in available network throughput caused by congestion, interference and protocol issues can result in a poor user experience. Veebeam have significant experience in analysing and optimising performance to more fully exploit the available 802.11 MAC features. We also have experience in wireless MAC management software for dynamic channel selection.
As contributors to the EU C2Power project, Veebeam have developed a test fixture that allows for automated control of the RF environment between multiple Wi-Fi nodes. Different radio environment conditions can be controlled and the impact on application performance observed and logged. The RF environment seen by each Wi-Fi node is centrally controlled by a test fixture controller that runs Python test scripts.
In addition to the tools developed for C2Power, Veebeam have developed a suite of tools and techniques for analysing video streaming performance. Although the wireless network may theoretically be the limiting factor, many other system parameters can impact streaming performance. By identifying system issues such as software bottlenecks or sub-optimal buffering, the capabilities of the underlying network can be more fully exploited.
For DLNA streaming applications, Veebeam have real-time tracing facilities available for both DMS (media server) and DMR (media renderer). These traces provide an unprecedented level of detail and enable complex system issues to be analysed and resolved.
